Reflection Blog 6

On Tuesday, I am amazed by the Boston bombing article. We read the article and discussed it in class. I am surprised how people can help the police to find out who did put the bomb. When the surveillance video was posted to public, it will increase the chance and efficiency on finding the truth. We gather all the sources together. The role of crowdsourcing is very important. We have that in Hong Kong too. If we find a picture, we can post it to a particular forum. People will give you the answer. It is amazed that if we use it in a right way, everyone can be a police. We can learn new things through social media.

There is a homework that we did on Thursday. It talks about beware the parental overshare. I think kid will get annoyed if their parents post too many things about their kids. Personally, I don't like parental oversharing. It is because there is privacy for the children. We need to protect the children. Parents don't need to post everything about the kid on social media. People do not need to know everything about your children. It will affect them when they grow up.

Last Tuesday, we have watched a video called “lost memories”. It was filmed in France. It talks about how technology takes away the time we spend with our loved ones. One day, if your digital stream collapse, all the pictures, and videos we had we will be lost. Tomorrow will never be the same. We will lose all the memories we had. In the video, they asked a question. After the electromagnetic storm wiped out the entire digital data in the world; mails, photos, videos, web, market data had been lost. What do you have left? It really caught me to think maybe it is time to get rid of technologies and spend time with our family and friends.
On Thursday, we have also talked about Slacktivism. It is a actions performed via the internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiting little time or involvement. For example, Facebook and Twitter allows people to like, share, and twitted anything interesting they saw on the internet. People can now express their concern about social or political issues with nothing more than just clicking the mouse. I think it works because it is better to do nothing. Furthermore, some of the post might catch people’s attention. People can receive tons of information online and choose which event they want to engage more. I think it is not a bad idea. We also talked about ALS ice bucket. I did not join the ALS ice buckle challenge even though some of my friends asked me to do it. I do not like the way people get pressured to do it.

Last Tuesday, we did not have class. I met with my classmate in the class. We discussed our presentation on Facebook.
Last Thursday, we had a class instructed by Paul Wilson. I have learned about the dark web or secret web. It is 400-500 more than the public web. It was created during War World II. It makes hard for people to track your IP or computer. TOR is a free software for enabling secret communication. Tor’s use is intended to protect the personal privacy of users, it is very useful in China. China blocks people from using Facebook. However, Tor network makes it possible for the people in China to access on Facebook by connecting others computer or server outside of China. Some people use this network to sell drugs or weapons. It is a good tool but it depends on how people to use it. FBI use honey pot to catch the criminals in TOR network. We have also discuss if it is good to have dark web because we can leave all the good things in surface web and leave all the bad things in the dark web.
We have also discussed about Youtube. Youtube is a great marking area. You can catch people’s attention. For example, United breaks my guitar make the stock of United Airline goes down. Viral videos can catch people’s attention easily.

Reflection Blog 3

This week, we talked about how video goes viral. I am so amazed on how those videos go viral. It has an exponential growth suddenly. I have watched some of the viral video too such as Gangnam Style and etc. For that type of music video, I have no idea why I would play it over and over again. I really agree to the Ted talk. The videos go viral because we do not just enjoy it now, we participate. This is why the video goes viral. We try to edit it, share it and make fun of it.
We have also talked about social media and news. I have a thought on that. Nowadays everyone can be a journalist. For example, a picture of a car accident can be on Facebook or Instagram faster than the ambulance comes. Good thing is that we will be able to receive the news more quickly and easily. However, we sacrifice our privacy and the accuracy of the news. I really like the example that our professor Dr. Kinghon made, he said” what if you lost your phone and google crash, then we will use Facebook.” It is true because when I first came to Hawaii I did not have a phone, I just used Facebook to contact anyone who are in Hawaii and back in Hong Kong. I reflected back into those days. I am so grateful for social media which help me to stay connect with my friends all over the world.

Reflection Blog 2

In this week, I have understood more the difference between the web and the internet. Web and internet are different. I do not know that web and internet are different until this week. It is fascinating to know that the history of web and internet. I started to appreciate more on the people who put efforts into this work which makes the world now. Facebook, skype, streaming media, are not internet. Internet is the system which support the web from my understanding. More I learn about the internet, I become more grateful to it. The best thing about the internet is free and open. It was created by government but it is not controlled by any countries and government. Nobody owns it. Everyone could write or post something on the internet. It makes the world become more connected. I remember the first time I can skype my parents on my mission because they allow us to skype our parents in the middle of my mission. I was able to see my mother’s face. I could feel that we are so closed and connected. I remember when I first came to Hawaii, I don’t have a cell phone. Facebook become an important tool for communicating with my friends here and the friends back home. It is all because of the internet which allows me to still have the connection with my friends. Although there are some disadvantages about the internet, there are still advantages. It all depends on how we use it. I understand better on the social media and technologies.

Reflection Blog 1

Today in class, I have learnt so many things about social media. Social media is different from the technologies. Social media has the ability to allow people to give feedback or to social by using the media such as Netflix is a social media because people can gives comments or to share it to your friends. However, cable television is not a social media because it does not allow people to interact with others.

I have found myself afraid to be alone with myself. Whenever I was waiting for the bus or being alone waiting for someone, I will pull out my cell phone even though I was not looking at anything specific on my phone. I really like the video that we watched in class. The speaker said that we are so vulnerable, we will be nervous and anxious when we are alone with ourselves. However, we will never feel alone with social media. We have to learn to be alone because it is the time when we can ponder. Furthermore, when my friends and I had dinner outside, we always play with our cell phone. We still communicate with each other, but we are not looking at them. We will just look at our screens. If we use our social media impropriety, we will lose our ability on how to interact with others face to face. There is something that I would like to change. I really miss the time when I was on my mission. I got to time to ponder and I do not feel weird and awkward if I cannot use social media.
